After finishing my training in Charlotte, Schneider, my employer, put me in a truck with what they call a training engineer for ten days to two weeks. To be a training engineer (TE) at Schneider you must have three years experience with the company and go through a TE training program. For the last week or so I have been driving my TE’s truck from state to state making deliveries while he supervises me and ensures that I drive safely while I learn the ropes. I did this once before back in 2003, and not much has changed since then. In our time together we made deliveries in Harrisburg, PA, Baton Rouge, LA, Dublin, GA, and Rural Hall, NC. I think we made some other stops, too, but I don’t recall where they were at the moment.I should complete my time with my TE this week and will probably be assigned to my own truck soon.

I have one year of experience as an over-the-road driver and recently I decided to get back behind the wheel and hit the road again. I decided to go with Schneider National, my previous employer, and they said I had to attend the four-day orientation for experienced drivers. I drove to the nearest Schneider Training Academy in Charlotte, NC and began my re-introduction to the trucking life.

After a couple days of classroom refresher training I took a road test and I had a hard time shifting through the gears in the truck. When backing the truck and trailer into a parking space it took me several tries to get it right. I would attribute my poor performance to the fact that it has been three years since I have driven a truck. As a result the instructor recommended that I go back through the 14-day new driver training. I thought I would be in Charlotte for four days and then I would be sent out on the road, but my four days has turned into 14 days. I can’t wait to get going, but I’ll have to be patient.

I’ve been so busy doing other things that I haven’t had the time or interest in updating my blog. One thing that has occupied my time is work. As of tomorrow I will have worked sixteen days in a row without a day off. This is a good thing because I need the money and I am learning new stuff at my job. I love learning. I was filling in for the Promotions Editor who was on vacation so I had to learn how to do part of his job. It was hard work, but it was really fun, too. The job involved taking various television commercials (promos) and putting our logo, time and date info at the end. I also got to assemble video clips into a commercial for Get Down! Town. Another project involved putting together a one minute movie intro for our 8pm Saturday Movie. The different parts were created by other people in the Promotions department and I made them fit into a 60 second commercial that has Gina introducing the movie.
