It was an act of God

sistine-chapel

If God created the Universe then he must have created everything in it. Creationists use things like the eyeball to show that life could not have happened by accident. But why do you need God only in the case of eyeballs and not in the case of even the simplest biological forms? Even the simplest living cell is so complicated that scientists do not understand all its workings. If the act of creation was a miracle, then every time a lamb is born is also a miracle. Every time hydrogen and oxygen join to form water is a miracle. Every time a photon of light travels from a firefly to a frog’s eye is a miracle. If God created the Universe then nothing can exist without God’s continuous intervention. He is someone who is continuously spinning plates. If he takes his attention away the plates come crashing down. But a God that can create a universe is all powerful and can keep all those plates spinning with ease. Every time a raindrop falls from the sky you have witnessed an act of God.
nail
When a nail rusts, when iron oxidizes, this is an act of God. How can it be otherwise? Did the iron oxide choose to form itself out of oxygen and iron? How can anything happen without the Creator’s immediate involvement? That is if there is a Creator.

25 Replies to “It was an act of God”

  1. I’m not sure I folla ya. A creator can make something but then not be involved in what happens with the invention.

For example, I could sew up some juggling bean bags, sell them and not be involved in their subsequent juggling.

Similarly, computer programmers can write a program for a robot but then not be involved in what happens once it starts going.

Of course, I don’t believe in a Creator as there is no evidence for one.

  2. REASONABLE EVIDENCE THAT
THE ONE TRUE GOD IS THE GOD OF THE BIBLE,
JESUS IS DIVINE AND EQUAL WITH GOD THE FATHER,
AND THE WORD OF GOD IS TRUSTWORTHY

    FAITH BASED ON EVIDENCE

    AUTHORITY VS. EVIDENCE

Any religious system which demands faith in its teachings on the basis of authority rather than on the basis of evidence, and is unwilling to allow its doctrines and claims to be examined freely, should not be trusted.

Reason and evidence point the direction for faith to go. Faith must not violate evidence and reason or it would be irrational faith.

Faith is a response to proven truth.

Evidence is all around us. The creation reveals God. “The heavens declare the glory of God….the invisible things of God from the creation of the world are clearly seen…even His eternal power and Godhead, so that all are without excuse.” (Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:20) All this did not happen by chance.

    ACCOUNTABILITY

The unbeliever chooses to deny the evidence, because if he accepted it, he would be accountable to the God he admitted existed.

    LOGIC

No one can make himself believe. First, we must accept the logical necessity of God’s existence. Without God, neither the universe nor we would exist, and there would be no purpose or meaning for anything. “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.” Only a fool believes the universe came into existence by chance. The Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling said one living cell in the human body is “more complex than New York City.”

    FULFILLMENT OF PROPHECY

The major proof of God’s existence is the fulfillment of hundreds of specific prophecies as validated by witnesses, archaeology, and totally reliable historic accounts..

    WHY FAITH?

But why does God demand faith if there is evidence? Why didn’t He just give us the proof of everything.

In order for everything to be proved and reasoned out for us, we would have to be equal to God, and we are not. We don’t have the capacity to understand everything about God and His universe. We are only children, and children must trust in someone greater than they. Therefore we need to trust Him and what He tells us about things, and these are in the Bible. We are told only what we can understand with our finite minds, and all that we need to know, but not more than we need to know.

“Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face…..”

Hebrews 11:3 says that “through faith we understand that the worlds were framed…so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” This thing was invisible. Now we know what it is. It is energy. And yet we don’t know all there is to know about energy.

    THE BIBLE AND SCIENCE

There are many other books written by proponents of other religions, but the only ancient book, the Bible , is accurate in all scientific details. Even the Koran, a comparatively modern book, abounds with historical and chronological blunders.

    CONSCIENCE

In contrast to the philosophers of the world who have been trying to prove the existence of God, the Bible doesn’t waste time in doing this, because the very fact that all of mankind has this concept about God in his conscience proves that He exists.

    THE BIBLE TRUSTWORTHY?

What about one who says “I can’t say I know something is true when I’m taking it on faith from a source I don’t trust.”

    Is the Bible trustworthy?

We are surrounded by sweeping denials of the Bible’s authenticity. Should we just keep on believing, no matter how mythical they say the Bible really is?

What about these people who deny the Bible’s credentials? They, like the rest of us, bring their own basic presuppositions to the study of the Bible and these determine the outcome of their investigations. Two non-negotiable dogmas are held by them at all costs:

    1. None of the Bible is accepted without independent confirmation from history and archaeology. They limit themselves to what secular sources can confirm, and that is all. If it is not mentioned in extrabiblical sources, the event is not to be believed. For many years King David did not exist until his name was discovered in two inscriptions. Now it’s fashionable to believe that he was indeed a king of Israel. But please note – no other historical documents are held with such skepticism. Ancient manuscripts are usually accepted at face value.

    2. They believe deeply that no miracles can have occurred. Even though they believe David lived, they would not believe David had an encounter with an avenging angel on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. Did Christ exist? Although Christ was mentioned in contemporary secular literature, one (and no doubt many) scholar nevertheless doesn’t believe He existed.

    HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY

The Bible is either all true, or it is riddled with errors. If it has historical errors it might well have theological errors too. If Moses didn’t cross the Red Sea, why should we believe God gave the Ten Commandments on Sinai? If the Bible names the wrong Roman ruler when the decree was given for Joseph to return to Bethlehem, why should we believe in the Virgin Birth?

Biblical history and biblical theology are often so closely entwined we cannot separate one from the other. The crucifixion of Christ is both an historical and a doctrinal event. The Bible, therefore, cannot afford to have historical errors. And it does not.

The majority of archaeological finds have illuminated biblical history and have confirmed the biblical record. Many discoveries have shut the mouths of biblical critics. Dr. Henry Morris wrote “In view of the great mass of corroborative evidence regarding the biblical history of these periods, there exists today not one unquestionable find in archaeology that proves the Bible to be in error at any point.”

    FAKERY

Hamilton wrote, “The scriptures are an exact representation of the reality and not clumsy attempts to reconstruct the setting many years after the events, at a place from it and with no accurate sources from which to draw as the critics would have us believe.”

Archaeology has proven that Moses did not rewrite accounts of the creation already in existence, but received his information from God. When Nineveh was excavated, thousands of clay tablets were discovered that comprised the library of King Ashurbanipal of Assyria who reigned 668-626 BC. Among these writings was a set of seven tablets called ‘Creation Epic” that record six days of creation and one day of rest, corresponding exactly to the biblical account. Even though there are some heathen accounts, all were derived from a common source.

Whenever a writer borrows an account from another, he always embellishes it and never simplifies it. Therefore we know that the Hebrew account written by Moses is the original and the heathen accounts were revisions of it. Any who suggest that the Hebrews borrowed the account would be compelled to admit a large-scale revision, alteration and reinterpretation in a fashion which cannot be substantiated for any other composition from the ancient Near East or in any other Hebrew writing. The Genesis account is so lofty, so straight-forward and free of picturesque adornments that another explanation must be found.

The account of the flood is another example. There are many versions because the story was spread by word of mouth. Clay tablets were found in the same library of the same king of Assyria. All the accounts agree on the details of the ark, the family, the flood, resting on a mountain, the dove and raven being sent out and the family offering sacrifices. There are no fewer than 33 separate versions of this gigantic flood, only two of which do not coincide with the biblical account.

Each nation shaped the story to make it compatible with its own deities and worship. Another discovery confirms the Tower of Babel and the people being scattered and their speech being made strange.

For decades it was said that the O.T. writers invented the Hittite tribe since their existence couldn’t be independently confirmed, but it was in 1911 that Professor Hugo Winckler of Berlin discovered some ten thousand clay tablets at the site of the Hittite capital.

The existence of Solomon’s reign and his thousands of horses were at one time questioned, but excavations revealed the ruins of thousands of stalls for his horses and chariots.

    CONTINUOUS VALIDATION

The Bible is continually being proven to be reliable year by year. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls confirms that what we hold in our hands is a reliable copy of the original documents. We can safely say that the Word of God has been preserved throughout the centuries so that we might know His will for us and His plans for a future world.

William Ramsey, a noted historian and archaeologist, set out to prove that Luke’s history of the birth of Christ was filled with errors, but emerged surprised saying ‘Luke’s history is unsurpassed in trustworthiness down to the minutest detail.

    DATING OF DOCUMENTS

What about the textual proof of documents and the reliability of copies? The answer is a resounding YES to their reliability. We can also independently confirm the text of the N.T. by papyri manuscripts that were discovered in Egypt, dated as early as A.D.125 and extensive quotations of the N.T. occurring in the writings of the early Church Fathers. Sir Frederic Kenyon, formerly director and principal of the library of the British Museum wrote ‘The last foundation for any doubt that the Scriptures have come down to us substantially as they were written has now been removed. Both the authenticity and general integrity of the books of the N.T. may be regarded as finally established.”

As far as errors copyists made, the variations are usually in spelling and word order, and no doctrine is affected by these.

“Time” magazine said ‘atheists can’t wait to prove the resurrection of Christ was a fairy tale.” But this is one tale that can’t be explained away.

Some say the New Testament was written centuries after the time of Christ. Proof that this is not so comes from a bitter opponent of Christianity, Celsus, who was born early in the second century, and referred to the four Gospels as part of the sacred books of Christians and well-known in his day. Many of the writers stated that they were eye-witnesses of Christ. If the N.T. was concocted centuries or even decades later by other parties, the whole thing is a fraud and presents numerous insurmountable problems. Here we must say it is either the Word of God and accurate in its totality, or it is a total fraud, which we know is not true.

F.F. Bruce writes, “There is no body of ancient literature in the world which enjoys such a wealth of good textual attestation as the New Testament.” “The earliest extant manuscripts of the N.T. were written very close to the date of the original writing.”

To compare the Bible with other ancient literature, here are some of the famous ones (Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, Demosthenes, Caesar, Lucretious, etc.) The number of manuscripts by these writers still existing today range from 2 to 200, where in contrast, there are 24,600 copies of the N.T., some of which date back within a century of the originals, and others within 300-400 years.

    INTERNAL CONSISTENCY

There is the internal consistency within the Bible’s 66 books written over a period of 1500 years by more than 40 writers, most of whom had never met one another. The intricate pattern of truth is woven without contradiction throughout the Bible. Any fraudulent writer would have to know the entire Bible intimately and be able to maintain its supernatural internal consistency. It is highly unlikely that any deliberate liar would have either the motivation or the ability to do so.

    MORE ARCHAEOLOGY

We know from archaeological discoveries of quotations in other writings that the N.T. in its entirety was in circulation at least by the end of the first century. Many people were still alive at that time who had known the apostles and to whom their writings rang true to fact. There would have been an enraged outcry had the epistles not told the truth. Yet we have no such evidence of such an outcry. The Jewish rabbis would have jumped on the slightest lie or exaggeration.

In Luke 3 there is a whole list of detailed information including names, places, offices, and dates which would not have been known by someone writing even decades, much less centuries later.

Any critic of the Bible who continues to level charges against the Bible is doing so in spite of and not because of the facts.

Archaeological evidence keeps pouring in. Over and over the Bible is vindicated. As a result of its continual verification by archaeological findings, the Bible is used by many of today’s archaeologists as a guide in locating ancient cities. The Jews preserved the original manuscripts like no other has ever been preserved. They kept tabs on every letter. They had special classes of men within their culture whose sole duty was to preserve and transmit these documents with practically perfect fidelity. Who ever counted the letters and syllables and words of Plato or Aristotle, Cicero or Sececar as the Jews did for the Old Testament? No wonder that the Isaiah scroll found among the Dead Sea Scrolls showed no significant variation in 1000 years of copying. In contrast, there are many questions concerning the text of Shakespeare which is only about 400 years old.

Why then do we hear so often that the biblical manuscripts are not reliable? The reason is because of the extreme prejudice against the Bible because OF WHAT IT SAYS. GOD’S WORD CONVICTS THE CONSCIENCE. No one ever raises questions about the accuracy of the other secular manuscripts.

The Bible is the most quoted book in the world, thousands of times more than any secular work. It has always been the case.

    SCHOLARS

Professor Robert D. Wilson from Princeton, in his book SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, who is fluent in over 40 Semitic languages, and was one of the greatest language experts and scholars of all time, wrote: “for 45 years continuously I have devoted myself to the one great study of the Old Testament, in all its languages, in all its archaeology, and in all its translations. The critics of the Bible claim to be seeking truth. They say ‘All scholars agree.’ I wish to know who the scholars are and why they agree. Where do they get their evidence…? I defy any man to make an attack upon the Old ‘Testament on the ground of evidence that I cannot investigate…. I learned the necessary languages to do so, and investigated every consonant in the Hebrew Old Testament. There are about a million and a quarter of these. It took me many years.

The result of those 45 years’ study has been this: I can affirm that there is not a page of the Old Testament concerning which we need have any doubt…..” Take the kings. There are 29 kings and ten different countries among these 29, all of which are included in the Bible and on monuments. Every one is given his right name in the Bible, his right country, and placed in correct chronological order. Think what that means….!”

    PROPHECY AND……

The Bible is about 30 percent prophecy, and this puts it in a class totally set apart from all other writings. There are no prophecies in any of the other religious books of other religions. The Jewish Messiah is absolutely unique in this respect.

    NOSTRADAMUS

Maybe you have heard of the man, Nostradamus, and his predictions. We have to conclude that he got his information from either God or the devil, and we know by his other teachings and his belief in astrology, which God warns us again, he didn’t get his information from God. Even his most ardent followers admit that Nostradamus was often wrong.

James Randi, a Nostradamus expert, said in his 1990 book that Nostradamus prophesied only one time in which he mentions an exact date. He also said that Nostradamus has a record of being very, very wrong. He made 104 verifiable predictions in which he actually named a place or a person or a time, and of the 104, 103 were wrong.

The one which mentions a date is his prediction that in July 1999 from the sky will come the great King of Terror to resuscitate the great king of the Mongols. There are 40,000 Web pages devoted to him and this prediction and include everything from a new comet to the Cassini space probe loaded with 72 pounds of plutonium which, if there is a miscalculation or meteoroid, could cause the spacecraft to re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere and cause a nuclear accident, but NASA says the odds are less than one in one million. . Some say July 4 will mark the beginning of a world war in which Russia will attack Europe with nuclear weapons, or the Comet Lee will strike the Earth, or an invasion by China or the rise of the third antichrist. . IN Japan they are building shelters. However, the date has been moved to October to account for the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar.

    FALSE PROPHETS
The Scriptures are very clear that if he were wrong but once, he should be condemned as a false prophet. False prophets occasionally predict the future accurately, but this does not prove the validity of the prophet’s doctrine. Only God gets it right every time.

God invites us to compare His prophecies with those of other religions (Isaiah 41:21-29).

    PREDICTING THE PRESIDENT

Has anyone ever predicted who would be president of the U.S. 150 years down the road? And has anyone ever described what would be one of that president’s most important domestic/foreign policy decisions? Only God could and did do that. When Isaiah was writing (700-680 BC) Babylon was just coming into its own. Isaiah predicted that this nation would eventually surround Jerusalem and take the Jews captive. That prediction was fulfilled a hundred years later.

Then he predicted that Babylon, in turn, would be conquered by the Persians. Persia was also barely in existence at the time, but Isaiah predicted she would become a world power and conquer Babylon. Then Isaiah added that the king of Persia would allow the captive Jews to return to Jerusalem, and it all happened just as he said. But Isaiah, speaking for God, actually named the king who would rule the Persian Empire and let the Jews return. No wonder he wrote so often ‘thus saith the Lord.’ Keep in mind that Isaiah foretold Cyrus becoming king 100 years before he was born and 150 years before he actually became king.

    TYRE

The prophecy about Tyre is also remarkable. Ezekiel (in chap. 26:12-14) predicted that Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, would come against the city and break down its walls and houses, and would never be rebuilt. Tyre would become bare like the top of a flat rock. All of those predictions were fulfilled by Nebuchadnezzar and Alexander the Great. The people escaped to the island and a half mile from the shore built strong fortifications. Neb. Didn’t bother to take the island. For 240 years the island city of Tyre survived while its mainland was in ruins. It appeared that Ezekiel’s prophecy would not be completely fulfilled. Consider the fact that the United States is almost this old. Would we not doubt such an event would ever take place if we had to wait that long?

But 240 years later Alexander the Great marched down the coast of Palestine to Tyre and determined to conquer it. Because it was so well fortified he had to build a causeway from the mainland to the island. In spite of great difficulties, he eventually conquered the island city. Even today the city has never been rebuilt, and fishermen spread their nets on the flat rocks just as verse 14 predicted. Tyre is on our maps today only because the modern city is in a different location from that of ancient times.

    JESUS CHRIST

All the prophecies concerning Christ’s first coming were fulfilled and therefore we can be confident that the other prophecies regarding Christ yet future will also come to pass. We are warned, however, that ‘…..In the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts and saying, ‘where is the promise of His coming? Forever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.’ (II Peter 3:3-4)

    DANIEL

Daniel’s prophecies were also incredible. There were 135 prophecies in Daniel 11:1-35, all of which were literally fulfilled. Some say the prophecies were written after they had occurred. Therefore the dates of their writing were attacked from every imaginable angle. The book of Daniel was attacked in this regard, but every assault failed, and it stands today impregnable. Even the most critical skeptics had to admit that this book had been part of the canon of the Old Testament long before the coming of Christ which was prophesied, down to the very day Jesus would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey.

    JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

It has been said that the name “Jesus” does not appear in the Old Testament. Since His complete name, which is given in many places in the New Testament, is Jesus Christ, His name does appear in the Old Testament because the name “Christ” is the Greek equivalent of “Messiah.” So the name Jesus Christ really means “Jesus the Messiah.” The name “Shiloh” is also a title of the Messiah. There are hundreds of Messianic prophecies naming the Messiah in the Old Testament which were uniquely fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ so that the possibility of their accidental convergence on any ordinary man is completely ruled out by the laws of probability. The chance of fulfillment of only 20 of these prophecies by one person is one chance in 10 to the 175th power. But all of them were fulfilled.

    INTERPRETATION

It’s been said that the Bible can be made to say anything someone wants it to say. Others say we can prove anything we want to by the Bible; it’s all a matter of interpretation. You will be hard put, however, to take even one sentence and logically prove it doesn’t mean what it says. No word has an infinite variety of meanings, much less a sentence or entire paragraph. This shows how badly people want to be able to dismiss the Bible so they can embrace their own foolish ideas.

    ALL OR NOTHING

What about the fact that some say the Bible is true in some places, and not true in others? If the Bible is not true in even one area, then Christianity becomes untenable. This is because each part of the Bible is intimately tied to every other, so that if one falls the whole falls with it. Would you trust ANY book which was part lie and part truth? Some say they believe some of the historical facts about Israel in the Bible are true. However, the Bible says “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God.” It’s either all, or nothing at all. The Bible has been scrutinized, evaluated, analyzed, dissected, reviewed, compared, and weighed, and all of it continues to stand the test.

    RESEARCH

Unfortunately the average person never takes the time to check the accuracy of the derogatory statements made about the Bible. The Talmud, Josephus, Cornelius Tacitus (Roman historian A.D. 55-117), Pliny the Younger all wrote about the events in the New Testament and all lived in the first and second century. Also Celcus, Lucian, Epictetus, and the Emperor Marcus Antoninus all confirmed the New Testament accounts.

Many who doubt the veracity of Scripture do so on the basis of hearsay from those in rebellion toward God, or reading books written by those whose goal in life is to prove God to be wrong so they can continue to live without Him and not be accountable to Him.. The motivation of an author needs to be considered when accepting or rejecting his works. Many have set out to disprove the Bible by an inexhaustive search under every rock, came away believing it. Also, those who have honestly sought the truth rather than setting out to prove their original agenda, also find the truth and this either bolsters their wavering faith, wipes away their doubts, and/or brings them to faith (or greater faith) in God and His Word. “Yes shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’

    OBJECTIVE SECULAR CONFIRMATION

Actually there is far more substantiation of the Bible’s authenticity and accuracy to be found in early secular sources than we really need. These secular writings also provide intriguing supplemental insights which prove that it was impossible for the N.T. to have been fabricated years after the events. There is no way that a forger, putting together a counterfeit record that purported to be written by eyewitnesses of events, or anyone relaying a story passed down from one generation to another, could have provided the narrative including the tidbits of information necessary to authenticate it.

The famous Mark Hopkins wrote in his book, EVIDENCES, that there are four tests which must be met in order to establish any work and the events it records as truly accurate:

    1. Men’s outward senses must be judges of it.
    2. It must be done publicly in the face of the world
    3. Not only must public monuments be kept up in memory of it, but some outward actions must be performed.
    4. Such monuments and actions must be instituted and commence from the time that the matter of fact was done.

The first two rules make it impossible for any such matter of fact to be imposed upon men at the time, because every man’s eyes and ears and senses would contradict it. The Gospels and most of the epistles were written within a few years after the events recorded therein. Thus there were many people still alive who would have refuted what was written if it had not been true. Such accounts would have become known as frauds and would be publicly discredited.

    DISCIPLES INVENT THEIR STORY?

Could the disciples have invented the stories about Jesus? Were they overcome with ‘Messianic fever’ and therefore embellished the stories of Christ? Did they turn an ordinary man into a Messiah? There are three reasons why they could not have done so:

    1. Jesus as described in the N.T. differs radically from the kind of Messiah that was anticipated by the Jews of His era. Jesus was a poor candidate to be ‘deified.’ They expected Him to break the Roman occupation and reunite Israel and Judah. He was a bitter disappointment on all counts. They wanted the kingdom now. He said His kingdom was not of this world.

    2. They were psychologically incapable of taking a man and calling him God. The central tenet of Judaism is ‘The Lord our God is one Lord.’ The greatest blasphemy was calling a person or thing, God. To deify a mere man would be contradicting their law. Instead, they had to be convinced that He was indeed the Messiah, and not of their own making.

    3. The resurrection transformed these men into convinced followers of Christ. If the Christ of the N.T. had not really existed, no one would have invented Him, or could have invented Him. They answered ‘Never did a man speak the way this man speaks.’ Either we are judged by this man, or we judge Him. The choice we make determines our destiny.

    CHRISTIANITY INVENTED?

What about Christianity being ‘invented’ some time later when all those who lived at the time would have died? In order to disprove this possibility, the historical and archaeological records of the time Christianity began would need to be scrutinized. The last two rules prevent the fabrication of a fictitious story years after the supposed date of the alleged event. This would be like writing an account of the American Revolution and the celebration of July 4, 1776 at a later date when no revolution was ever heard of, nor had anyone ever celebrated the Fourth of July. It would not be possible to introduce any account of their origin essentially different from the true one.

With Christianity, we celebrate baptism and the Lord’s Supper even more frequently than the Fourth of July because they have always been considered the chief rites of a religion to which men have been more attached than to liberty or to life.

Christianity involves established customs and churches, and a history going back to its very foundation by Christ.

It was impossible that the apostles should have been either deceivers or deceived, and that the New Testament could not have been received, either at the time they purport to have been written, or at any subsequent time, if the facts recorded had not taken place.

    CHRIST AS THE GOD-MAN

What about Christ Himself? Liberal scholars have always tried to separate the historical Jesus, the man, from what they call ‘the Christ of legend and myth.’ They have ended up with as many different ‘historical Jesuses’ as there are scholars. Since they reject the manuscripts of the N.T. as authoritative, their own conception of Jesus was all that mattered. Some say He was a hippie, a Jewish reactionary, a charismatic rabbi, a homosexual magician, or insane.

Their subjective opinions led them to admit the quest for the historical Jesus ended in failure, and that the Christ of the N.T. was a whole piece of cloth. They couldn’t separate the historical Jesus from the mythical Jesus. No razor blade was sharp enough to carve up the N.T. with any objectivity. So they concluded that ‘we know nothing whatever about Him.’

Try as they might, people have not been able to find a purely human Jesus anywhere on the pages of the N.T. They are faced with a clear choice: accept Him as portrayed in the N.T. or confess ignorance about Him. The gospel portrait of Him is either all true or all false.

Augustine wrote ‘If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you don’t like, it’s not the gospel you believe, but yourself.’

    CHRIST VALIDATED THE OLD TESTAMENT

We also know that Christ believed O.T. history and referred to it many times. Adam and Eve are thought by some to be myths, but Christ confirmed the Genesis story in Matthew 19:4-5. The flood is considered to be a myth, but Christ confirmed it in Matthew 24:37-39.

Some say Christ didn’t believe in the flood Himself, but merely took advantage of contemporary beliefs. This would mean that he said ‘an imaginary person who at the imaginary preaching of an imaginary prophet repented in imagination, shall rise up in that day and condemn the actual impenitence of those his actual hearers.’ Christ believed; do we know better than He?

Christ confirmed Moses in John 6:31-32 and Jonah and the fish in Matthew 12:39-41.
He also affirmed the O.T. prophecies about Himself in Luke 18:31-33 and Luke 22:37, Matthew 26:24, Mark 14:21, Matthew 26:53-54, Luke 24:25-26 and 46-47, John 5:39, 46-47, John 13:18 and Psalm 41:9 and in many other places.

    CREATION VS. EVOLUTION

When we believe in a creation rather than evolution, we should ask what kind of a God would be qualified to be the cause of all that we know about the universe?

    1. He would need to be a God of awesome power.

    2. He must be personal, possessing intelligence and will. The biblical God created man in His own image, though we are independent of God, yet have intellect, will and emotion. The evolutionary view says that thought is the interaction of blind forces of physics and chemistry. Incredibly, evolutionists believe matter can think! It is much more scientific to believe that it takes an intelligent personality to create intelligent personalities.

    3. He must be outside of time. Time is measured by the motion of heavenly bodies. Scientists tell us the universe would collapse into a small ball of matter without the continual forces of gravity that keep the electrons in motion. ‘He upholds all things by the word of His power.’ (Heb. 1:3)

    4. This God who created, also has dominion over His creation and can bring it to an abrupt end whenever He chooses, as well as judge the creatures He created. It’s His world, so He can and has made the rules. We don’t tell Him what or how to do anything, or when.

    GREAT SCIENTISTS AFFIRM THE CREATOR

Einstein says that he is amazed at the harmony of natural law which reveals an intelligence of such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.

Sir Fred Hoyle, astrophysicist said ‘A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with physics, chemistry, and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature.

Robert Jastrow, astronomer wrote, “For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. The scientist scales the mountains of ignorance and, as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.’

Carl Sagan, a dedicated atheist admits ‘It is easy to see that only a very restricted range of laws of nature are consistent with galaxies and stars, life and intelligence.’ The logical conclusion is that these highly ordered laws were created by a highly ordered superintelligence.

    HARMONY

The Bible harmonizes with the theory of relativity as in II Peter 3:8. It also agrees with the first law of thermodynamics that the amount of matter in the universe is constant; none is being created or destroyed. It substantiates the second law of thermodynamics that the universe is becoming less ordered or it is wearing out. In Hebrews 1:11-12 we read that the Lord created the heavens and the earth, but ‘they all will become old as a garment, and as a mantle Thou wilt roll them up.’

Only an omnipotent God could give this universe its beginning and sustain it. Only a personal God could account for personal beings.

Many scientists are now admitting that evolution is contrary to known laws of science and is not based on science, but on naturalism, the belief exposed by Carl Sagan.

We marvel that anyone can believe that nothing times nobody equals everything; that impersonal matter could become highly organized on its own and ‘create’ intelligence and purposefully sustain life.

Evolutionists who refuse to concede to creationism do so because their commitment to materialism and humanism (because of mankind’s innate depravity) overrides a commitment to science.

There are three gaps evolution has not been able to bridge:

    1. The gap between nothing and matter.
    2. The gap between matter and life
    3. The gap between man and the lower creation.

    POWER TO CHANGE LIVES

The Bible has also demonstrated a supernatural power to rescue human beings from sin and degradation and transform their lives. That a deliberate fraud could effect so much good is preposterous. It would require more faith to believe that scenario than to accept the Bible’s claim to divine inspiration.

    WHAT ABOUT PURE, HARD EVIDENCE?

Some require this proof. Can we PROVE the Bible is the Word of God? There is only one science that needs no proof and is self-evident. That is mathematics. All other kinds of knowledge, including science, are dependent on observation and experience. Even after all the evidence is in, there might be an exception. Scientists have studied thousands of snowflakes and tell us there are no two alike. We might say they have ‘proved’ this to be so. But, since there are hundreds of billions of snowflakes that have never been compared to one another, there is no ironclad proof.

    HISTORY

When it comes to history, the more recent an event, and the more witnesses, the more credibility can be given to such accounts. The simple fact is that arguments from the history of anything can never provide evidence that is absolutely ‘foolproof.’ After all, history cannot be repeated. None of us was a witness to God’s creation. Then why does not mankind reject ALL history?

In the case of the Bible, the question of ‘proof’ becomes even more intriguing. This book not only speaks about matters of history and morals, but reveals the subtle deceptions of the human heart.

That is why THE MOST COMPELLING REASON WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE TO BE THE WORD OF GOD IS ONE THAT IS AVAILABLE ONLY TO THOSE WHO HAVE A DESIRE TO SUBMIT TO ITS AUTHORITY. Without the ‘willing’ there cannot be the knowing.

FAITH IS STILL REQUIRED IN EVERYTHING BUT THE EXACT SCIENCE OF MATHEMATICS.

‘Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarded of them that diligently seek Him.’ (Heb. 11:6)

No matter how much evidence for the credibility of the Bible is accumulated, Christ must still be received by faith. This is not blind faith, nor is it contrary to logic, but it is faith based on reasonable evidence. If arguments for Christianity were absolute, if irrefutable evidence was produced, no faith would be needed. Then people would HAVE to believe.

For anyone to say that ‘I can’t say I know something is true if I have to take it on faith from a source I don’t trust,’ means they will forever remain faithless and unbelieving and fearful of the future.

It’s not easy to face the unknown and have to say, “I just don’t know” That is exactly how anyone will have to face his destiny. They will never know because God and the Bible cannot be proved like the exact science of Mathematics.

We become convinced that the Bible is the Word of God, not by subjective hunches, but only by having our subjective hunches destroyed when we are humbled in the presence of the God revealed on the pages of the Bible. Then we say ‘Once I was blind, but now I see.’

    UNWILLING TO SUBMIT TO GOD

The Bible is a mirror, not a photograph. It shows us what and who we are. No wonder the Bible scares those who are unwilling to face their sins, because they are unwilling to subject themselves to it, and the God who wrote it.

To the doubter, there are reasons why they doubt.

    1. Factual doubts are probably genuine.

    2. Volitional doubts involve a choice to not believe, probably for moral reasons. The intellectual doubts are often a smoke screen for a fundamental unwillingness to investigate the Scriptures seriously.

    3. Emotional doubts often plague people who are depressed or feeling guilty. They want to believe, but their emotional equilibrium doesn’t give them the freedom to resolve the question of faith and evidence.

    SPEAKING PLAINLY TO THE DOUBTER

If you are seeking the truth. If you are open to the possibility that God has intervened in history, even if it challenges your self-perception, you will find the Bible a path to faith.

If you find yourself wanting to believe but unable to do so, look to Christ and the cross. We can do no better than to renew our confidence in Him as the one and only Saviour; the One who will not deceive us.

When the skeptic studies Christ and reads of Him with an open mind, Christ will be sudden death to his pride, pomposity, and pretense.

Hymns and songs are the marks of the true church, the Bride of Christ, whose heart cry is expressed in music stemming all the way back to the Psalms sung in the temple. The follower of Christ reaches up to God and and as a testimony to others as a way of praising God, adoring Him, giving thanks to Him, confessing sin, rehearsing over and over the gospel story, and looking forward to the glorious hope of the believer.

God, the creator of music, motivates the human heart to ‘sing before the Lord,’ to ‘come before His presence with singing.’ No other faith or religion has a history or present occupation with hymns and songs in which to offer praise and worship. Their music is often in a minor key, it is haunting, sometimes fearful, and it is without hope.

Only the one true God draws from our hearts the very song He put within His children. All other music is counterfeit. All other music glorifies man. When there is no eternal hope, there is no eternal song.

Is there one true God? Is the Bible His authentic Word?
There is enough evidence for those who seek, but not enough for those who take pride in their skepticism.

    HEART ATTITUDE

The attitude of the heart is just as important as the reasoning of the mind. Skeptic, your problem is not an intellectual one. It is not one of requiring evidence or even a trustworthy source for truth. Until you give up alternately trying to believe and consigning yourself to resting in ‘peace’ without believing, and begin trusting, you will NEVER know the truth and never know real peace! Your ‘peace’ now is a false peace. It is resignation.

FOR THOSE WHO CLAIM ‘PEACE.’ WHILE NOT KNOWING ANYTHING FOR SURE:

You may say everything you knew about God came from either the Bible or another Christian. Where did they get this knowledge? From the Bible.

You may say what you thought was the Holy Spirit were only memories and habits. Those memories and habits were based on the Bible; there was no other authority for our lives and so what we did and said, for the most part, came from it and its teachings. So you can’t divorce memories and habits. If you had memorized a lot of Bible verses as a young person, they are probably still a part of you. That’s the way it is with this incredible book. We cannot wipe it out. It will stand forever because it is a supernatural book.

    SPECIAL REVELATION?

God does not speak to us outside of His Word. Are you waiting for God to reveal Himself to you in a very unique way?

Do you want to see lightning and hear thunder? Do you want to see a vision of God? Do you want an angelic visitation? Do you want to be so overwhelmed that you cannot function until you acknowledge His presence and His claim upon your life? Do you want to feel your heart beating wildly and break out in a heavy sweat? Do you want to be drawn as in a trance? Do you want to be struck down to within an inch of death until you are forced to call on Him? Do you want a sign in the sky; perhaps your name spelled out in the clouds?

    GOD’S ONLY REVELATION

He has revealed all we need to know about Him in the Bible. If we need any of the above experiences, then we are telling God we will not come unless He does something more than He already has, and in addition to requiring simple faith. We are commanding the God of the universe to do it our way. Who are we to make demands of God?

If we don’t come His way, there is no other way. He uses our consciences, but our consciences can only be enlightened and directed through His written word.

The Holy Spirit convicts us, but He uses the Word directly, our memories based on it, or what honest people have told us based on it. It all comes down to the Word of God.

MANKIND NEVER SATISFIED** (**Until he finds his rest in God.)

It’s all there; nothing needs to be added. We are not to add anything to it or take anything away from it.

‘And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.’ (Rev. 22:18, 19)

This is what all the cults and false religions have done, including Judaism and Roman Catholicism. They have all added words and works.

‘There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.’ (Prov. 30:15, 16)
Humankind is never satisfied. The pride of man insists on adding something to salvation and faith. He must do something. He must see something. He makes demands of God.

    RELIGIONS VERSUS CHRIST

We may defend all the religions of the world as being equal with Christianity or worthy of our allegiance. But every single one of them is based on works, including their accounts of and motivation for martyrdom.

Christianity could not have been originated with men because it is not a religion at all, and it’s not based on works. Christianity goes counter to human nature; it does not appeal to the pride in man, and it is so simple. Mankind wants to make it complicated because men must have a hand in everything to control it.

Christianity is also different from every other faith or religion in that there is no bondage or a set of rules one must keep in order to be accepted. Christianity is the only ‘religion’ that is pure faith based on reasonable evidence.

FALSE PEACE IN THE WAKE OF RESIGNATION

If you say you are at peace, maybe your ’emotional equilibrium’ and ‘peace’ are not what you think.. Eventually you decide not to go against the currents of evil influences because you have surrendered. It is like swimming in a turbulent stream, which leads to a precipice over which you could fall and be dashed to pieces. You know the precipice is there and so you have been swimming upstream in the opposite direction to avoid it.

But the swim became too hard, too fraught with rocks of doubt which impeded your progress and sharp branches which inflicted pain as you wrestled with your flesh and its desires. And all the while Satan was watching you from the bank. And you weren’t enjoying the swim. You made a little progress and then you slid back from time to time. It seemed as if you were getting nowhere. So you gave up and surrendered to the stream. You laid back in the water and let it carry you in the opposite direction with no effort at all. You watched the clouds overhead and heard the birds singing. The scene was tranquil. You were mesmerized and neutralized; you didn’t care anymore. And Satan knew it would happen this way. It usually does.

But hovering over you was an unseen Presence. It was probably God’s hand reaching down to you. But you refused to exercise your faith to reach up for help. You just gave up. And you are calling this ‘peace.’

    ASSURANCE
Here is a story which should encourage and assure those who are saved, but have drifted from their original beliefs and are now wandering and far from God. God hasn’t moved; they have! Have they removed themselves from God’s hand and are they no longer one of His?

    THE DEATH ANGEL

When God told Moses to inform His people that the death angel would pass over the camp of Israel one night and kill the firstborn, He told them the only way to be safe would be to apply the blood on the doorposts of their homes. This, of course, is symbolic of Christ’s coming death and shedding of His blood in order to make us safe.

    TWO HOUSES; TWO BOYS

For sake of illustration we will take two homes in which there was a child, a firstborn. Whether he or she had siblings is not necessary to the story. Both sets of parents believed the edict from God through Moses. Both sets of parents applied the blood to their doorposts. Both firstborns were safe in their respective homes. Both firstborns initially believed. However, each firstborn had a different attitude.

    FAITH AND DOUBT

The firstborn in Home Number One was content to rest in the promise and reliability of God.. But in Home Number Two the firstborn began to have doubts. ‘I wonder if it will really happen? I wonder if my parents aren’t just telling me a story. Maybe I will really die. Or maybe nothing at all will happen. ‘ He vacillated back and forth and finally decided it was all a sham. He decided not to believe. However, he was IN the house, but he didn’t have the peace and contentment of firstborn in Home Number One. However, maybe he thought he had peace after coming to the conclusion that it was impossible to really know whether or not there would be a death angel and he would die. He had lived in rebellion for a long time, even though he had initially believed. But he was in the house nonetheless.

When the death angel came that night both boys were safe.

    HEART ATTITUDE MADE THE DIFFERENCE

The firstborn in Home Number One had true peace because of his faith in God. The second boy had missed out. If we expanded this illustration to cover many years, we could say that the firstborn of House Number Two literally wasted his life. He had lived with no purpose. His life did not impact anyone else for any spiritual good whatever, and he would die a spiritual pauper with virtually no rewards in eternity. His life would have been spent selfishly and in rebellion against the One he once believed and to whom he owed everything, but gave Him virtually nothing in return.

    MISSING OUT

He missed out. Oh, he may not miss Heaven because we can know his childhood commitment was real since ‘Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.’ He had come in childlike faith and had believed.

Now in his desire to go his own way……in his insistence that one cannot know…in his pride and rebellion, yet fearing the future while experiencing his own brand of false peace, he ends up spinning his wheels and wasting his life.

    POTENTIAL

This person may be very intelligent and gifted; perhaps he is charming and winsome with great potential for influencing others for good and for God. But he is choosing to live in the dungeon of hopelessness instead of surrendering and saying ‘no’ to his pride and his flesh, and giving himself, and who he is, to the God who made him and gave him all that he has.

    GOD’S REVELATION IS COMPLETE

God has promised that if we come in genuine faith and bring our doubts, He will not chide us for our doubts, but will take back His wandering child just as He did the prodigal son.

‘I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the Father said to His servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry; For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.’ That was written for all of us. (Luke 15:11-24)

It is only when we step out in faith that our eyes will be opened and we will KNOW. ‘These things are written that you may KNOW.’

    FORCED BELIEF

God does not force us to believe. He rewards only those who, unlike Lucifer, humble themselves and admit they are just children and only God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and everywhere-present. He wants us to trust HIM and not ourselves.

    IS SEEING BELIEVING?

If we refuse to trust Him, we are saying ‘I am the only one I can trust.’ I trust only my own reasoning and intellect. I must be able to put God in a test tube and see. However, if we can put Him in a test tube, then He is a very small God and not worthy of our trust.

‘Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing ye might have life through His name.’ (John 20:29, 31)

If we need iron-clad proof for God and the Bible, then we are saying ‘ without it I will live without You, and only for myself. I will be my own god.

We could also be saying to God ‘Even though You created all there is, including me….even though You died to save me and You will never stop loving me, I cannot trust You or believe You because you are not worthy anymore.’

‘I am the master of my fate, and the captain of my soul.’

‘God, You are no greater and no better than I am.’

  3. Dedwarmo, I would say that God established the laws by which natural processes take place, so I suppose in that sense you could say that every natural occurrence is an “act of God.”

The Bible says in Colossians 1:16-17, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him. And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

That phrase, “by him all things consist” implies that God is holding everything together, such that if He were to withdraw His power, the four forces of physics would cease to exist and all matter would randomize very quickly.

  4. http://www.astrosociety.org/pubs/mercury/31_02/nothing.html

FTA – “In the inflationary theory, matter, antimatter, and photons were produced by the energy of the false vacuum, which was released following the phase transition. All of these particles consist of positive energy. This energy, however, is exactly balanced by the negative gravitational energy of everything pulling on everything else. In other words, the total energy of the universe is zero!”

  5. Bobmo, are you saying that matter can exist without God, but energy cannot? From what I understand, the separation of energy and matter is not so clear. Take this excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Matter: “The common definition of matter is anything that has both mass and volume (occupies space)… In the context of relativity, mass is not a conserved quantity. Thus, in relativity usually a more general view is taken that it is not mass, but the energy–momentum tensor that quantifies the amount of matter. Matter therefore is anything that contributes to the energy–momentum of a system, that is, anything that is not pure gravity. This view is commonly held in fields that deal with general relativity such as cosmology.”

  6. Well, since matter and energy are interchangeable, perhaps matter itself could not exist indefinitely if all energy disappeared. On the other hand, perhaps matter could survive maximum entropy. Scientists speculate that some day the universe will die a heat death (sounds like Biblical prophecy), which means that there is no usable energy left, but doesn’t necessarily mean an end of matter. I’m not sure what matter would look like at that point, but it’s interesting to think about. In any case, there is definitely something holding everything together and it’s consistent with your statements about the Creator’s immediate involvement.

    @Perry
Perhaps mathematically the total energy of the universe is zero, if you count gravity as negative energy. However, there does seem to be real energy in the universe. Also, by this same reasoning, there is no matter in the universe either. I heard an atheist in a debate once make the claim that “nothing divided into positive and negative” and that is what formed the universe. Sounds like had been reading Filippenko and Pasachoff!

  7. So the answer is, “Gravity did it”?

It’s interesting that you would mention gravity. According to Physicist Paul Davies, “Calculations by Brandon Carter show that if gravity had been stronger or weaker by 1 part in 10 to the 40th power, then life-sustaining stars like the sun could not exist. This would most likely make life impossible.” (Paul Davies, Superforce: The Search for a Grand Unified Theory of Nature. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1984, p. 242.)

And of course, there is no creator required for gravity because….well, gravity just is.

And then there are the other forces of physics (electromagnetic, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear) — no creator required for them either.

The beginning of the universe from nothing — no creator required.

Or, if there were no beginning, eternal matter and energy — no creator required.

The fine-tuning of the universe for life — no creator required.

The existence of intelligent life on earth — no creator required.

    Abiogenesis — no creator required.

Patterns of incredibly complex specified information in all living matter — no creator required.

In writing about the fine-tuning of the universe, Robin Collins wrote,

…We will summarize the argument by explicitly listing its two premises and its conclusion:

Premise 1. The existence of the fine-tuning is not improbable under theism.

Premise 2. The existence of the fine-tuning is very improbable under the atheistic single-universe hypothesis.

Conclusion: From premises (1) and (2) and the prime principle of confirmation, it follows that the fine-tuning data provides strong evidence to favor of the design hypothesis over the atheistic single-universe hypothesis.”

  8. Perry,

Take a look at this article by Luke Barnes. It is a two-part critique of Victor Stenger’s analysis of the fine tuning argument.

    Critique Part 1

    Critique Part 2

In the article, Luke makes several observations about Stenger’s argument:

    1) Stenger’s equation for the lifetime of a main sequence star is wrong. Significantly wrong.
    2) Stenger doesn’t consider the effects of altering gravity.
    3) Stenger chooses a life-permitting criterion (“long-lived-stars”) that is one-sided and continuous.
    4) In his MonkeyGod code, Stenger ignores a number of constraints on his model universes.

He concludes part 2 of his critique with this:

Allow me to state my conclusions with the kind of candour only allowed in the blogosphere: MonkeyGod is bollocks. It is worse than irrelevant – it is misleading. It is a distraction, encouraging us to simply look the other way, to condescending (sic) dismiss the evidence for the fine-tuning of the universe for life. It is utter garbage, thinly concealed behind a veil of mathematics.

The worst part is that others are taking Stenger’s work as the definitive debunking of fine-tuning.

  9. When he says…”Choose a different universe, and you almost certainly do not get a different form of intelligent life. You get no intelligent life at all.”

He provides no support of this at all. In fact, it’s simple to imagine that there is a different universe that leads to a different type of intelligent life.

For his other stuff, I’m too ignorant on the specifics of what he is talking about (e.g fine structure constant) to make any judgment about the validity of his arguments. Perhaps you can explain what he is talking about?

Incidentally, if you more closely read the blog post of part 2, you would’ve known that Stenger does consider the effects of altering gravity. The blog author changed the post accordingly.

  10. You’re right about Barnes modifying his comments on the effects of altering gravity. I remember seeing that when I first read his critique, but I forgot about it when I made my comments.

Regarding Barnes’ statement, ”Choose a different universe, and you almost certainly do not get a different form of intelligent life. You get no intelligent life at all,” I believe he does provide support for it. Most of the math is beyond me, but it seems that Stenger’s argument stands or falls largely on his ability to demonstrate that altering a number of physical constants still allows for a significant number of long-lived stars. He cites the results of his MonkeyGod program as allowing for universes where “…over half of the stars will have lifetimes exceeding a billion years, allowing sufficient time for some kind of life to evolve.”

By showing that Stenger failed to account for ? (the fraction of the total mass-energy of a star that is released through nuclear reactions), Barnes claims that Stenger’s calculations are in error, and when ? is accounted for, the result is the reduction of the lifetime of a given universe by more than two orders of magnitude, which in turn precludes the existence of long-lived stars which Stenger himself relies on to provide life permitting conditions.

Furthermore, Barnes states that ? itself is a fine-tuned constant (? = 0.007) which, if altered by only +/- 0.001 results in either no larger elements or no hydrogen and stars with lifetimes reduced by a factor of at least 30. I doubt that even Stenger would argue that these universes would permit any kind of complex, much less intelligent, life.

  11. Just because we can’t conceive what the intelligent life would be doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist in universes we don’t think it could exist in.

Stenger responded to Barnes and was unconvinced by his objections. “there is so much more to my case against fine-tuning that these one or two objections are no consequence to the final conclusion.”

If he is a man of scientific integrity, he would consider objections to his theory & either explain them or modify his theory. Perhaps he will do this in his upcoming book The Fallacy of Fine-Tuning.

Barnes too (if he has scientific integrity) would consider new arguments and modify his objections accordingly.

  12. Maybe this goes without saying, but let me see if I understand. If a miracle occurs it is evidence that God exists. The universe is so finely tuned to support life on Earth that it must have been a miracle. Since it was a miracle it is evidence for the existence of God.

Then the task becomes to show that the fine tuning of the universe is a miracle.

Which definition most accurately represents the meaning of “miracle”?

    1. A miracle is an event that has two possible explanations:

    a. God caused the event
    b. The event is the result of a long series of highly improbable coincidences.

    2. A miracle is an event that has no explanation except God caused it.

  13. I’m not sure it’s a given that if a miracle occurs it is evidence that God exists. It is simply evidence that the supernatural exists. God is merely one possibility as it could be Zeus, Allah, Ganesha, etc. But a miracle would fundamentally change scientific thinking.
