Maybe One Day I’ll Be a Real Backpacker

I car-camped two nights at Ochlokonee River State Park. The campsites were close together and the campground was at 99% capacity, but my neighbors were quiet.

I drove to the Oak Park Trailhead on the Florida Trail. The trail is marked with orange blazes but I didn’t notice the orange X’s on the railing by the trailhead. There is a tricky stream crossing (steep banks) and there are two alternate routes to avoid it. I ended up doing the stream crossing and turned down an alternate route which brought me right back to the trailhead. I picked up another set of orange blazes but it also looped back to the trailhead. I had already gotten a late start and didn’t have any maps so I decided to quit for the day.

I drove to town and ate at Hardee’s and contemplated my next move. I ended up driving back to the trailhead and sleeping in my car. The next day I attempted the trail again. This time I managed to follow the orange blazes for about two hours until the trail hit an old jeep track. I followed the jeep track until it was time for me to head back to my car. I had reservations at St Joseph Peninsula State Park and I wanted to get there a few hours before sundown.

I’m car camping at St Joseph, but they have some “primitive” camp sites that I may hike to tomorrow or the day after.
